First, get paper, pencil and tape measure ready.
Tips, direct from the pros:
- If you’re replacing your cabinet doors, remove them completely before measuring .
- Remember the old adage, “Measure twice, cut once?” It’s still true! Double check your measurements.
- Getting down to the nitty gritty: measure door openings to the nearest 1/16″
- “Don’t worry, I’ll remember it!” -says everyone, right before they forget. Write down your measurements! AND, don’t forget to note width x height. You won’t want to mix those up.
Measure your cabinet openings:
Measure from inside edge to inside edge, side to side and top to bottom.
Remember: double check your measurements, and write them down with the words “width” and “height.”
Figuring door size: Add a “door overlay” to your cabinet opening measurements, so the door edges extend past the cabinet opening on all sides.
Tips, direct from the pros: Since the typical cabinet door overlay is ½” on all sides, you can easily calculate your door measurements by simply adding one inch to your cabinet opening width and height. So, if your cabinet opening measurements are 14″ width x 32″ height, your door measurements should be 15″ width x 33″ height.
Of course, if you want a custom overlay or a different type of cabinet door, like an inset or Lazy Susan door, your measurements will differ.
